The essentials

What is equipment control cabinet?

An equipment control cabinet is an enclosed electrical assembly that manages the power supply and operation of connected equipment. It combines selected circuit breakers, contactors, motor protection devices and control components. Depending on the application, it may also include a VFD, soft starter or programmable controller for automatic operation.

How it works

Working principle

  1. Connect Power and Control Signals

The incoming electrical supply passes through the selected switching and protective devices. Control circuits receive commands from local switches, sensors or external systems. The cabinet establishes the required power and control paths for the connected equipment.

  2. Start and Regulate Equipment

Contactors, motor starters or VFDs operate the connected motors according to the control commands. Where required, the cabinet manages equipment sequencing, speed adjustment and automatic start-stop functions based on operating conditions.

  3. Monitor and Protect Operation

Selected protective devices monitor conditions such as overloads, short circuits and motor faults. When a relevant fault occurs, the protection and control arrangement responds according to its settings. Alarm signals can also be provided to operators or connected systems.

Why this category

Practical advantages

Review the selected model against the electrical and installation requirements of the project.

  • Cabinet configurations can be matched to the electrical and operating requirements of fans, pumps, compressors and HVAC equipment.
  • Direct-on-line starting, soft starting and variable-speed control options support different motor applications.
  • Automatic control functions can coordinate equipment operation with pressure, temperature, flow and other process signals.
  • Integrated switching, protection and control components provide an organized arrangement for installation and maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Can one control cabinet operate multiple pieces of equipment?

Yes. A cabinet can be designed with multiple motor feeders and control circuits when the available space, electrical ratings and operating requirements allow it. The number of connected machines depends on their loads, starting methods and control sequences.

When should a VFD be used instead of a standard motor starter?

A VFD is generally considered when motor speed needs to vary with operating demand, such as adjusting fan airflow or pump output. A standard starter may be sufficient for fixed-speed operation. The choice should also consider the motor, load characteristics and control requirements.

Can equipment control cabinets be connected to building or factory automation systems?

They can be designed to exchange operating commands, status signals and alarms with compatible building management or industrial control systems. The required interface, communication protocol and control responsibilities should be established before production.

What details are required for a customized equipment control cabinet?

Provide the equipment type, motor power, voltage, rated current, starting method, number of controlled loads and operating sequence. Installation conditions, required interlocks and any external control interfaces should also be confirmed before the cabinet is specified.
